When it comes to HO scale, there are just about as many options as there are in O gauge. To eliminate the flimsy and somewhat unsightly appearance of these connectors, many more serious modelers have taken to soldering their terminal wires directly to the outer and middle rail. These are typically powered using a CTC Lock-On Connector, which can be manually clipped to the outer and middle rails. Most Lionel train sets still included tubular track as recently as the 1990s, and as a result, there are still a fair number of layouts in existence which feature this style. Tubular track is one of the oldest legacy track types, and was at one time available in multiple scales. However if you plan to rearrange your model train track on a frequent basis, this might prove to be a little too fragile. It is also by far the least obtrusive option. If you’re building a complex O scale train layout with multiple isolated tracks and segments, this will provide both value for money and flexibility in use. These are simply your standard rail joiners with terminal wires attached. Another option is to use Atlas Terminal Track Joiners. It will additionally blend in fairly well if used in a permanent scene. This is a great option if you haven’t quite figured out your O scale track plan and want to experiment by running trains over different configurations. The quickest way for getting your trains up and running would be to purchase an Atlas Terminal Track. There are two options for powering these types of track. While MTH Realtrax and Lionel FasTrack are extremely versatile in their ability to be used on any surface, Atlas track is designed specifically for integration into a fixed layout with hand-laid ballast. This provides a little more flexibility for layout planning, and of course means less to worry about when purchasing your track.Ītlas track is generally the go-to choice for modelers looking for more realism. All sections of MTH Realtrax feature a knock-out panel allowing you to connect one of their lock-on power distributors anywhere on your model train layout. Rather than requiring you to source and plan for a terminal track, MTH takes a different approach with their system. Beyond these more important considerations, Lionel also offers a wide range of stylized track, most of which have their own version of the standard Terminal Track to allow your roadbed to appear consistent.

If you want to take advantage of Lionel’s Bluetooth LionChief system, then you would need to instead purchase the LionChief Terminal Track. If you are running a traditional transformer powered layout, then the standard Terminal Track is the best choice. Which version you buy however will be determined by which power system you are using. For their FasTrack system, you’ll need a Lionel FasTrack Terminal Track to receive power. With this in mind, it would be reasonable to assume that a newcomer in O scale would almost certainly be starting with Lionel train track. Lionel is without a doubt the most established household name in O gauge railroading. So what are your options? Lionel FasTrack Each of these styles has their own proprietary system for feeding power, and in the case of Lionel or MTH, these cannot be used with other track systems.
Older train layouts might even still use tubular track. Take a look at any O gauge layout these days and you’ll likely notice that it uses one of three main track types Lionel FasTrack, MTH Realtrax, or some form of ballast-free track such as those available from Atlas or Gargraves. If you already have a train set, this will likely come with a feeder track, but this may not be right for you if you want to expand your train set into a fully fledged layout. Your train scale, type of setup, and even the type of train you plan to run will factor into what train track and power accessories you need. But what type of train track should you choose, and how do you power it? Contrary to what you might think, there are actually multiple ways to go about this.
